Read Aloud Thursday: Leslie Patricelli

Yummy Yucky (Leslie Patricelli board books)

No No Yes Yes (Leslie Patricelli board books)

Quiet Loud (Leslie Patricelli board books)

These three board books by Leslie Patricelli have been favorites of all three of my kids as toddlers. The concept is simple for each. One one side of the page is something that is yummy or quiet or a “yes-yes” on the other side is the corresponding opposite.  For example, one spread shows a picture of a baby playing with toys in the toilet with the words “NO NO”one one side and on the other a baby sitting on the potty with the words “YES YES”.  One of our favorite combos is “Ice Cream, Yummy” and “Too much Ice Cream, Yucky”. An important lesson to learn, the earlier the better.

The illustrations are simple graphic drawings in bright colors and the text is only one or two words per page. They are perfect for the age that Ruth is right now (20 months). If it’s important to you that books for toddlers and preschoolers are educational these are a great introduction to opposites. However, judging from how much my own kids have loved these, they are also books that appeal to kids.

Visit Leslie Patricelli’s website to see all her books and to play some games (feed the yummy things to the baby!).

And as always, check out Hope is the Word to see what more parents and kids are reading together.

  1. Our Patricelli favorite is Higher, Higher! The illustrations drive the story in her books. I wish she’d try her hand at a picture book for a little older audience, too.
